I love being able to look at my list of fitness goals and know that I achieved what I set out to do. At the start of the year my goals were to run a 5k (improved pace over 2010), run a 10k (new distance target pace 10:00), and a sprint tri (finish uninjured). Nice little check mark next to each one – cuz I did it! Didn’t stop there. I added another sprint tri because I knew I could improve my time and I’m always up to a challenge. Saturday, August 27, I completed (and thoroughly enjoyed) my second sprint tri, and improve I did!
This time around I still wanted to finish uninjured, but I actually set time goals as well. I wanted to complete the race in 1:41, and my total time ended up at 1:44:26. I’m not disappointed in that time given the fact that the course included a trail run (like through the woods and all sorts of various and sundry terrain that didn’t resemble paved roads) which I wasn’t prepared for and I took a little spill early on when I tripped on a tree root that I couldn’t see. Most importantly, I made significant improvement over my 1st tri in June. Swim pace this time was 2:54/100m vs 3:46/100m, and my bike pace improved from 13.0 to 15.0, plus each of my transitions came in under target. Yeah, I know, I’m not the speediest human being on the course…pretty sure I can still improve and have made some good connections that will help with training in the future.
“Racing season” may be coming to a close, but there’s a little glimmer in my eye just thinking about what my goals will be for 2012. For now, I’m simply going to enjoy the discipline of keeping life balanced, eating right and being active—working out, playing tennis, ballroom dancing…
Hope you’re achieving what you set out to do and enjoying it along the way!
