Now, there are some who are amazingly good at keeping up with the outdoor riding in the cold weather. I am not one of them (though I do strive to be someday). For me, the bicycle trainer is an essential tool during these long winter training months. Getting ON the trainer, however, proves sometimes to be a greater challenge than the ride itself. This is part of why I love to train in the early morning. My husband and I have our “trainer dates” in the very early morning – before the kids are awake – and more essentially – before I am awake enough to make a decision about training. When I rise early, roll out of bed, throw on riding clothes and head down into the basement, it isn’t a decision to do so. It is habit. I decide the night before. I set up the trainer. In the morning, I just get up, go down in the basement, turn on something to entertain the mind, and put the body to work. By 8 a.m., I’ve done my training, had my breakfast, and am ready to face all that the day holds. Now, I know this may not sound good to many of you. But, it feels great to me to have a good, solid workout out of the way before I even, really, start my day. And, I’ve done it without the all day dread of “oh – I really don’t want to get on the trainer.” Try it – you may just like it.
