As cold weather sets in, many people hang up their bikes, or use an indoor trainer. But I want to encourage you
to keep on riding! I bike commute every month of the year, and with some simple preparations, riding in cold weather is enjoyable and keeps you outdoors.
First, keeping warm is pretty easy. I wear a base layer, then a geofleece shirt, and a warm weather cycling jacket. I also wear a neon colored wind jacket over that. For my legs I have leg warm’ers and wind pants . For my head I have a neoprene balaclava. Of course gloves are a must.
On just cold days I ride my road bike. But if it is slippery at all, I ride a hybrid with studded snow tires. Just remember, safety first. If roads are too snow covered, I just don’t ride.
Being seen is even more important in fall/winter when cars don’t expect to see bikes. I have front and rear lights to go along with my bright coat .
