Running and cars

I’ve had some close calls but yesterday what I feared most happened, I was hit by a car.  I was crossing an intersection, I had the right of way and I did everything we all do when we are out there.  Even with the right of way I looked both ways before I started to cross but because this car came from behind me heading South on Byron Center ( I was headed South too), making a left on to 28th St I never saw her.  Well I take that back, I saw a glimmer of light out of the corner of my eye just a second before she hit me.  I laid there for a moment trying to process what had just happened and then managed to hobble off the road.  My husband came, the police came but I told them I didn’t need an ambulance.  My right knee took the majority of the force so I did go to the doctor for an exam and x-rays and thankfully so far everything has checked out good.  The xrays will go to the radiologist for further review but the doctor is pretty sure that there is no fracture and I did not tear or harm the ACL or Meniscus because there was no major swelling and my range of motion, while painful, was good.  He believes I have some very deep bruising which should feel better in a few days!  It was dark, it was raining but I was wearing a bright yellow high visibility reflective jacket and was right under a street light on a pretty well lit corner but even so she still did not see me.  Even when we do everything we can to make sure we are safe out there the fact is we are incredibly vulnerable and all it takes is one driver distracted by something else to hurt or kill one of us!  So no running for a week, only cross training, but I will be back up and out there soon :)

I am married to a wonderful man who supports me in everything I do and is at every single race cheering me on! I love running and being fit; my husband sometimes refers to me as Jillian junior :) I love being able to help people reach their own fitness and weight loss goals because I know you're happier when you're healthier! I lost 100 pounds myself so yes I know where you're coming from!

How awful! So glad to see you are all right though. With the increase in distracted driving, I am always mindful that there is the potential for any driver not to see you anymore. It is a tough thing to think about. I hope that you are feeling better soon!

Thank goodness you are alright! Cars, and more specifically distracted drivers are no doubt a runners number one threat. You see them pull up to the intersection sometimes as you are approaching and they never look up and just drive right through. Sometimes they will block the intersection at a red light forcing you to stop, and will never look to the right to see you are standing there with your hands on your hips tapping your foot the entire time! I don’t know how much more you could have done, I am just grateful you were not critically injured.

Glad to hear you are ok. Did the driver stop at least? I tend to become a yeller in these situations and drivers get a piece of my mind sometimes. Scary running out there this time of year for sure.
