I finally made the decision… surgery here I come! Early November, I will have surgery to repair a torn ligament in my ankle. It wasn’t an easy decision to make because I love to be active… and my ankle doesn’t hurt EVERY time I run… just MOST of the the times I run and EVERY time I run outdoors… Plus I have been on a really good streak with balancing my workouts with my nutrition and I am the healthiest I have been in a long time. I am afraid of loosing all that, but surgery is needed so I can recover and come back stronger next season.
So now what? I’ve recovered from inury before, but not when I have been this consistent with my workouts and in a good eating pattern. Does anyone have any good suggestions for still getting in some sort of calorie-burning workout as I recover? I will be non weight bearing for at least 2 weeks and in a cast for 4-6 weeks after that… so I don’t really know what to expect or what I’ll be able to do… but I am open to any and all suggestions!

Angie, when I had my last knee surgery I used my AirDyne and only used the arms for a couple weeks. If you don’t have access to one they usually sell pretty cheap on Craigslist, etc. Or if you don’t want to do that and have access to a gym or are going through PT, most have some sort of upper body aerobic machine to help keep the motor running and the calories burning. I find most of this type pf equipment can give you as much workout as you want to put into them.
Know it was a tough decision for you, Angie. Wishing you a speedy and full recovery. Keep the good eating going. Good idea from Gary on the AirDyne arms only — can still get your heart pumping. We’ll see you back out there running before you know it.
Hmm, if it were me I would incorporate a swim program into my weekly routine or, go on a low carb diet for the winter or a combination of both. I would be too chicken to risk anything after surgery but I am sure there are plenty of options. Good luck on whatever you decide and we hope to see you out kicking asphalt next spring!
I’m sure you will have a much better recovery since your body is so healthy. I had a friend who severed her Achilles tendon and managed to stay active through her entire recovery. She used a hand-crank type machine for awhile. I would definitely recommend swimming or deep water aerobics if your doctor approves. Wishing you a speedy recovery!
