Finding My Fitness Squad

For me, fitness has always been the most fun when it was social. I was always part of a swim team growing up, went to the gym with my friends in college, and then found a new fitness routine in group classes. A few years ago I signed up for my first triathlon as a personal challenge and have fallen in love with the sport ever since. Training, however, hasn’t always been easy. IMG_4015I was often alone for early morning swims, long runs, and bike rides on the White Pine Trail. After the excitement of the first few races, my motivation to train was slowly fading away.

My second year of racing, I joined a small group for training indoors during the off season (shout out to Jeff!). Each Sunday we would swim, hop on the spin bikes, and then run around the track at the downtown YMCA. I made some great friendships and learned that training as a group was WAY more fun.

The next year, the group really expanded and I had even more friends to train with! We began connecting outside of our Sunday routine and would go on group bike rides, gather at races, and meet up socially. I learned that I loved having a group of friends who had healthy goals and understood this crazy sport.

It was through this group and connecting with other triathletes that I met the women who have been instrumental in my health journey this year and helped me accomplish my biggest challenge yet – a half Ironman. We call ourselves the “gold members”, but really, these ladies are gold. It has been amazing to find a group of women who have big goals, challenge each other, encourage each other, and have so much fun while doing it. I’ve learned that training and racing is so much easier and so much more fulfilling when you have someone along with you for the ride. We see eachother several times a week, whether it’s at Masters swim practice, running groups, group bike rides, or just hanging out together. I feel so grateful for this group of women who have been so instrumental, influential, and inspirational to my health journey. Thanks Lindsey, Melissa, Mallory and Amy! #GoldMembers4Life
