Bethany Beckman
Bethany Beckman I am a runner / cyclist / swimmer / triathlete living and training in Holland, Michigan. I was on swim teams throughout my childhood, was on the Swimming & Diving team and Lacrosse team at Calvin College, and got into triathlons right after graduation. I love my sport and I love being part of a team - especially the fun group of people that make up Team Priority Health.
Age:26
Hometown:Holland
Tell us about a memorable race experience. My most memorable race experience is probably the Breakwater half ironman in Petoskey, Michigan. It was my first half ironman distance race and a VERY challenging one! The temp that day was 95 degrees and the bike course was the hilliest I have ever encountered in a race or otherwise. I finished the race surprisingly in 3rd place, dehydrated and completely drained. The feeling of accomplishment I had after that race is something I look back to often when I'm encountering a new obstacle. I just say to my self "If I could do that, than this should be nothing".
What are 3 adjectives that describe your approach to your sport?Dedicated, enthusiastic, competitive
What are nutritional tips you use to gain optimum performance?During activity - Shot Blocks and water. Haven't strayed from it once. It's my magical combination. And I NEVER skip my cup of coffee before a race.
Give us some inspiration!I am motivated by 1.) the constant desire to improve. 2.) my teammates who are continually amazing me with their accomplishments. 3.) The joy of feeling HEALTHY! 4.) My endorphin addiction
What is your single most important goal this year?I love trying new things, so this year I plan to do my XTERRA! Wish me luck :)

My First Criterium

The Queen’s Day Criterium in Holland, MI was my first ever road event.  It was a great success but it wouldn’t have been so if it weren’t for the knowledge and support of my teammates.

“Training Insights from Star Athletes”

I read a LOT of articles on sports and fitness training and not many of them really seem to resonate with where I am as an athlete.

The Trip List: An Abridged Description of all of the Places I Want to Bike

During this time of year, all of my friends and coworkers are taking off on spring break trips and I feel chained to my desk, “holding down the fort” for the more fortunate.  So, as you can imagine, my mind often wanders to the places I wish I was traveling to this season.

Tools of the Trade: Winter Training

This post will act as my rebellion against the dreary, snow-less winter Michigan is forcing us to endure.  Way back in the day, when Michigan was known for it’s dark and delightfully snowy winters, distinguishable shoulder seasons, and perfectly reasonably warm summers, my favorite thing about being an athlete in Michigan, was experiencing the seasons in an [...]

Adventures of the Iceman

This past Saturday, in the snowy cold north, I competed in my first-ever mountain bike race (actually, my first-ever cycling race too). It being my first, I was bound to learn some lessons, so here they are.

This July, my father-in-law turned 65. A month later we decided to commemorate this milestone by biking 65(ish) miles along the coast of Lake Michigan, from Charlevoix to Mackinaw. This post hereby documents our epic journey.

For the Love of Endorphins

Endorphins, according to Wikipedia (my most trusted source of information for all inquiries), are produced by the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus in vertebrates during exercise and other activities, and resemble the opiates in their abilities to produce analgesia and a feeling of well-being.
