Keith Marek
Keith Marek I love to ride my bike and love winning sprints.
Age:19
Hometown:Fremont, Michigan
What‘s your history? I have never ridden for another cycling team before Priority Health. Now I currently ride for Brevard College and Priority Health at the same time. My favorite race in Michigan would have to be the Tour de Mt. Pleasant crit. My greatest accomplishment in cycling so far, is winning the South Carolina State Championship Road Race. It is a very hilly technical course, not suitable for me, a sprinter. I hung with the lead group until the sprint and won. Too bad I’m not a SC state resident and don’t get the jersey. I have never competed outside the United States, but I have trained in Canada a bit.
Tell us about a memorable race experience. My most memorable race was winning the South Carolina State Championship Road Race as a Cat. 4. The course was very hilly and technical. It was not suitable for me because I am a sprinter. Somehow, I managed to hang with the lead group over the climbs and descents to the final kilometer. It was a long flat kilometer and my teammate from Brevard College realized that he was not going to be able to win the race because he was a climber and couldn’t sprint. He got to the front of our group of 8 and hit it. He thought I was directly on his wheel, but I was sitting at the back of the pack. (tactical error on my part) With 300 meters to go, I realized it was now or never. Just as I pulled out to the left to start my sprint, my teammate swung off the front and I had to go on the far shoulder of the road, in the dirt and grass for a few meters and pass him. I held off the group for the win and it was the best experience of my life.
What are 3 adjectives that describe your approach to your sport?Aggressive, hardworking, fast.
What are nutritional tips you use to gain optimum performance?I am a sprinter; so therefore, my approach to dieting is probably not the same as other cyclists. My motto is, “As long as I feel well, I race well.” I do eat healthy though. My favorite energy boost is GU.
Give us some inspiration! My competition motivates me, my family motivates me, my friends motivate and encourage me, winning/having fun motivates me, but most of all, my grandmother motivates me. She endured so much pain, but persevered through it. While riding my bike hard, I realize I am half the pain she was in, and she fought through it with a smile, so I try to do the same.
What is your single most important goal this year?Upgrade to a Cat. 2 so I can compete and take top 25 at U23 Nationals in the Crit.
Complete this sentence: The thing I love most about competing is______________________.Having fun, and when I win, I have fun.

Feed Zones

Racing a bike can be confusing sometimes, especially for the spectators or people handing food in a feedzone. At today’s race, my father and I finally got on the same page and made our first successful feed.

Training Ride to School

As you most likely do not know, my mother is a Kindergarten teacher at White Cloud Public Schools. On one of my recent training rides, I rode to her school, stopped because I was out of water, and asked her to fill me up. I thought that because it was 12:00 pm, her students would [...]

Back on the bike: Concussions and cross bikes

Last weekend, I raced for my college, Brevard College in the Clemson races.  Since I am only a Cat. 3 racer, I am required to ride in the “B” field.
