Healthy Snacks

What is your favorite healthy snack and why?

Apples

My favorite healthy snack is an apple.   I discovered the Russet apple when I moved to Michigan a few years ago.  They are grown locally and super delicious.

Apples and peanut butter. Cheap, easy to find, easy to pack, and very refreshing after the zillionth dry, crumbly sports bar.

Apples are great because you can toss them in your backpack and eat them whenever. And they're crunchy!

We have a lot of apple lovers here, huh?   Good thing we live in Michigan!

Fruits and nuts

Fruit like bananas and oranges as well as nuts such as walnuts, sunflowers and cashews.   They are healthy, delicious foods that after a workout (or anytime) can provide valuable nutrients like potassium, ascorbic acid, and omega-3 fatty acids.

Fruit.   It's tasty, portable, no need to refrigerate or prepare ('except pomegranates, but they are worth the work).

Mix it up

I love mixing a small amount of dried fruit, Fiber One cereal and nonfat yogurt together for a snack because it is sweet and provides great protein, fiber, and calcium.   It makes you feel like you actually ate something substantial, with out eating a ton of calories.

How about...

  • Ripe tomatoes with fresh mozzarella, basil and some good olive on top?
  • Michigan cherries?
  • Ripe pears?
  • Freshly made granola with yogurt?
  • Maple syrup and oatmeal?
  • Bread fresh from the oven?
  • Fresh, strong coffee?
  • A frittata made with fingerling potatoes?

Isn't this one of the wonderful things about being active, all of the amazing food we need to fuel our bodies.
