North Iowa Pro-Cyclist to Compete in Bicycle, Blues, and BBQ Festival Race
The North Iowa Touring Club announced today that North Iowa
pro-cyclist, Tom Zirbel, will be participating in a USCF sanctioned
road race to be held in conjunction with the Bicycle, Blues and BBQ
Festival in Clear Lake, July 7-9, 2006.
Zirbel, a native of Clear Lake who graduated from Wartburg College in
Waverly, rides for Priority Health Cycling Team, one of only 15
International Cycling Union Continental teams in the United States.
Managed and based in Michigan, the team’s roster features a core of
Michigan’s top talent together with additional riders recruited from
throughout the US, Australia, and New Zealand.
Zirbel will be returning to his hometown fresh from winning the
prologue time trial at the 14th annual Tour De Nez, which kicked off
June 22 in Verdi, Nevada.
In addition to the 17, 42 and 72 mile USCF road race, which begins at
9:00am and race registration is open from 7:30-8:30am at the Surf
Ballroom, Sunday, July 9, Zirbel will participate in the Family Bike
Ride Saturday, July 8. Registration opens at 7:00am. The ride begins
at 8:00 am and riders will have three designated routes to choose –
14/42/72 miles. Riders of all ages are invited. Helmets are required.
The Family Bike Ride is $10 per person or $15 per family.
Zirbel will ride alongside the younger riders and beginning cyclists to
Ventura on North Shore Drive and will be in Clear Lake’s City Park to
sign autographs early that afternoon. Registered riders names will be
entered in a drawing for a chance to win an autographed team jersey
from Tom Zirbel and a pair of Oakley Sunglasses from Wayne’s Ski and
Cycle.
All proceeds from the Bicycle, Blues, and BBQ Festival will directly
benefit the Cerro Gordo Trails Association. For information on the USCF
race or other event activities, go to www.northiowatouringclub.com.
