RACE REPORT

Spartanburg Criterium, Spartanburg, SC
May 5, 2006

Spartanburg saw the first signs of rain for the USA Crit. Series and, after a long day of waiting around at the local coffee shop, not even the rain could dampen the riders spirits enough to keep them from the start line. The team was strengthened by the inclusion of Brent Bookwalter, who came out especially for this race, and Tom Zirbel's fearless attitude after his 2nd crash in as many weeks still taking the start line.

Despite the weather the course remained rather event free, with very few crashes. The action was however never lacking with Priority Health always in the moves, starting with Richard England who found himself in a move early with JJ Haedo (Toyota-United) and Vassili Davidenco (Navigators). Moves like these would be the way of the whole race, generally in groups of 3-5 with Brent, Richard and Glen being particularly active.

But as the series has come to expect, the race pack was back together over the closing few laps and it, again, came down to a bunch sprint. Brent, who had ridden great position was the first of the Priority Health riders in 8th with Richard following closely in 10th, the points keeping him in 8th for the general classification. JJ Haedo would run out the eventual winner, much to the dismay of his team captain Ivan Domingez who came in 6th. Leaving the series still up for grabs for any of the top 3 competitors going into the last race in Anniston, AL, May 6.
